On Sunday March 3, 2013, I woke up to a cold winter's blustery day and thought, “Who would go out on a day like this? Avid healers and nature lovers! I would have stayed snuggled in my warm blanket but I was leading the group to a healing walk in the park! Arriving at the park, the group was already assembled. Who was there I wondered? Folks longing for personal healing? Healing from disease? No matter what the reason, all came for a needed boost of energy only the outdoors can bring. But why, as soon as we step out into a glorious day, do we feel healing? We feel connected. Let’s look at why the need for connecting with the earth daily is so important. There is a Disconnection. Historically, we were meant to spend our days interacting with the earth and its gifts, but with modern technology, we have found ourselves much more indoors than out. If you are like me, there are days when being outdoors has meant climbing in and out of my car to get to work! We have come a long way from our ancestors who worked, lived and slept on the land! We wonder why we have so many autoimmune disease problems! Hippocrates (b. 460BC) once said, "Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. They are developed from small daily sins against Nature. When enough sins have accumulated, illnesses will suddenly appear." Is inflammation, which is a part of aging and causes a myriad of other diseases, a form of anger from our bodies longing for its connection to the earth? This is an interesting question but not only asked by me, but by others including Rob Stein of the Washington Post who wrote in 2008, "Is Modern Life Ravaging our Immune System?"
With this in mind, we can surmise that healing can easily occur and be at your barefeet or fingertips when you physically get connected to the earth. Your feet and hands contain thousands of receptors just waiting to balance itself with the free electrons generously given from the earth's surface. This pulsating wonder of energy that is the earth, is simply a part of our makeup and when we remove ourselves from it on a daily basis with little or know reconnection, maybe our disease process or dis-ease is simply longing for a walk in the park. Simply longing to complete its circuitry through a major outlet called the (G)round, the (A)ir and the (S)un. Interesting this an acronym spells GAS. Is it possible we have put far to much emphasis on food and supplements? We tend to forget that fuel for the body is not just the foods we eat. It is the air we breath which is connected with spirit, the ground we walk on and the sun providing a major nutrient! What if we looked at the earth as Vitamin G for ground (first described in "Earthing" by Clint Ober). What if this were a vital nutrient you could not live without?! Now we look at the air and let's call that Vitamin O for oxygen. We all know we can't live without out that! And what about the sun and Vitamin D? The importance of Vitamin D for bone health and overall body functioning is all over the literature. So let's put this together and see if it makes sense as an acronym: Vitamin G = Ground Vitamin O = Oxygen Vitamin D = the nutrient from the sun Do I see GOD being spelled here? Maybe you call God the Universal Life Force or Chi or Allah, no matter the name you use, all of this energy (because "everything is energy") spells out a message for us calling to reclaim our rightful place on earth. This does not include the earth made of synthetic fibers or concrete or rubber soled shoes, but the earth we can touch with our hands or the grass we can walk on in bare feet. Along the way on our healing walk in the park we stretched up our hands to the heavens with our feet planted firmly on the ground. We took a deep breath thanking our earth for the great gift of life it waits to share with us everyday of our lives.
